Oh, devotion and all the ways people express it.
For your consideration is a delicate prayer card, meticulously hand-cut and hand-painted with gouache.
The text I believe reads, "Jesu Gamali". "Jesu" meaning "Jesus" and "Gamali" meaning 'Gamaliel", a biblical figure, Pharaisee, and teacher of St. Paul.
The card is in great condition for its age and has vibrant coloring, and intricate detail, all favorable signs to add to your collection.
On "canivetes": Canivets are delicate 17th-18th century devotional artworks, intricately hand-cut from paper and often hand-painted with religious imagery. Named after the French word canif (penknife), they were crafted by nuns and monks as acts of devotion, resembling fine lace. Popular in France, Belgium, and Germany, they depicted saints, Christ, or Marian scenes and were used for personal prayer.
Thanks for looking and be well.
Megan
