A watercolor portrait of a woman painted by James Douglas (1858-1911). Signed J. Douglas 1886. About the Artist: James Douglas born in Dundee on April 28, 1858, was the second youngest of seven children. His father was an upholsterer and musician. James claimed to be a self-taught artist, exhibiting for the first time at the age of 16 in Dundee in 1874. This exhibit was one of his drawings. He exhibited three watercolors at the inaugural Dundee Fine Arts Exhibition of 1877, and a watercolor, an oil, and a pen & ink at the Dundee Fine Art Exhibition of 1879. He was elected Member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolors (RSW) in 1900. He signed his subsequent paintings 'J Douglas RSW' rather than dating them. Paintings by this artist have sold at Bonhams and other auction houses across the country. Very rare to find a portrait by this artist. Could have been of his mother or wife? Condition: The watercolor itself is in great condition and gorgeously matted in a unique oval shape. The frame is original (and oh so magical) however cracked in many places and missing a few pieces (see photos). The back paper is very old and peeling off at the top. This painting is in overall great condition for its age. Dimensions: 17" x 13" (includes finials/moldings on frame)
